Their mission is to encourage, educate, and empower so that people from all areas of our communities – neighbors to political leaders, business owners, and more -can clearly see the ability in disability and create new opportunities to keep those with disability engaged and connected.”
Jaimie Valentini was introduced to me through a friend of mine and fellow churchgoer at Chaplestreet Church in Geneva. I kept hearing about Rising Light Project on social media and media outlets and wanted to see how I could support their mission. Jaimie has been working with families impacted by disability for over 12 years both as an educator and a leader in her church. She’s passionate about helping everyone feel more included.
When I met Jaimie the first time, she told me about a discussion she was having with her Friday group (a group that meets every Friday for social hour and to plan for their summer garden) about how the community can help them feel more included. The group was polled, and they all said that they just wish people would smile and say hello. Which led to the creation of the t-shirts with that slogan. I’m wearing one in the video, and you can purchase yours here.
Some other ways that you can help support Rising Lights Project is to volunteer your time or make a monetary donation that helps them host more events and reach more families.
One of the projects that her group looks forward to each year and plans for year-round is their summer garden in Elburn. Last year they had a robust harvest of herbs that they turned into teas and body scrubs as well as their best-selling honey. The honey is a hit in my house! My daughter asks all the time for some in her lunch and as a treat at the end of the day. You can purchase all these items from the Rising Lights Project.
