“Help!” I said, “I’m doing a thing! Anyone have experience with juice cleanses?” This is what I wrote in my Instagram story on January 10th just a week before sitting down to meet Ryan Castle at his business Clean Juice in St. Charles. I wanted to dive in and really experience a juice cleanse. So, I signed my husband (he was also excited!) and I up for two days of the Anti-Inflammatory Cleanse, gathered all my juices then took my excitement to Instagram to see if I had any friends with experience. And, I was SHOCKED by the response. So many people who are friends and community members came to me raving about their own experiences and gave me some advice. One friend said “Don’t forget to drink a lot of water it helps keep you satisfied”. Another said, “You got it! Just drink lots of water. I enjoyed many of their juices”. While many other friends were just very curious to hear how it would go for us.

Before I get to my review of the juice cleanse, I’d like to tell you a little about Clean Juice in St. Charles. Ryan Castle opened the doors to his business a little over a year ago with the hope to bring clean, organic, healthy food choices to the Fox Valley. He was struggling to find good healthy options for his family and when he heard about Clean Juice was immediately inspired to open a storefront in St. Charles. He and his wife work together with other family members and staff to deliver delicious juices, smoothies and food options to our community. One of my favorite things about Clean Juice, aside from its obvious health benefits, is the ease of ordering. I’m often running around town between listings appointments and showing homes and I need something quick and delicious to keep me going. You can download the Clean Juice app, order ahead and pop in for a quick bite to eat in their dining room or head out to your next event fueled up for the day. They have a wide variety of sandwiches, wraps, acai bowls, and even a section of the menu dedicated to kids. My kids are looking forward to trying the cheesy wrap and the wild one berry smoothie. If you have a few minutes, I encourage you to come into the store to watch their team prepare your meal. If you order a juice you’ll see the huge pile of fresh veggies and fruits that go into just a single juice. It really is a sight to behold and helps remind me to make good dietary choices.

Which brings me back to my juice cleanse. So, I actually LOVED all the juices. I tend to eat on the go as I mentioned before, and don’t always have the luxury of spending the time chopping up a fresh salad or making a healthy and balanced sandwich. Oftentimes, you will find me with a coffee in one hand in an easy to consume bite in another (something like a granola bar that’s been in my glove box for a few weeks, for example!). So to have 6 delicious juices ready to drink throughout the day was a very good reminder for me that I need to be feeding my body healthy food to fuel my motivation and to-do list. The Anti-Inflammatory Cleanse included the gold, red, green, yellow, orange and then another gold juice at the end of the day. The gold juice packed a punch in terms on nutritional density, it’s less of a juice and more of a nut milk, made from cashews. To me it tasted almost exactly like the milk that would be leftover in the bottom of a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Not a bad way to start and end the day. The green juice tasted like a cucumber and spinach salad (which I like!), and the red had a beet flavor which I was very excited about. Beets are one of my favorite vegetables and if I’m going to order one of the fresh made juices from their menu I opt for The Energy One, which has apple, beet, carrot, celery, ginger and orange. Going back to the cleanse juices, the orange one tasted like sweet carrots and the yellow juice, which is a lemon cayenne combo packed a spicy punch. In all, the juices left me excited to continue because I liked the flavors and also satisfied my hunger throughout the day. Not once in the two days did I feel overly hungry. Okay, now I have to share my favorite part of the cleanse, and surprisingly it really had very little to do with the actual juices. What I loved most about the experience is that it reset my brain. I can’t count the number of times in those two days that my feet found their way to the kitchen for something to eat when my brain was checked out running down my list of things to do for the day. My mind literally wandered to the kitchen when I wasn’t even hungry! Preparing and consuming food is such a ritual of life that I’m hardwired to find my way to the fridge or pantry. Each time this happened I reminded myself that I wasn’t hungry and that my body was getting all the nutrition it needed from the juice. And, the other thing I loved is that it made me hyperaware of all the other bad food choices I had been making. My life cannot go on drinking caffeine all day, a brownie bite for breakfast, a granola bar for lunch and my daughters discarded macaroni and cheese for dinner. If you were to step into my kitchen today, weeks later, you would find my fridge stuffed with fresh vegetables (we are having beets with dinner!) and less to-go options cluttering the pantry shelves.

So, ladies and gents, that’s my review of The Anti-Inflammatory Cleanse. It will be something that Kevin and I add to our routine at intervals that make sense for our family. Please, go check them out for yourself, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

I hope you enjoyed the video this week, and if you have a recommendation for another place I should try or a person you think I should meet, leave me a comment below!

FUN FACTS ABOUT RYAN CASTLE

Favorite Restaurants: “Three favorite restaurants, that certainly depends on whether we are on date night or with the kids!  I would tend to lean towards Gia Mia, Riverside Pizza, and La Mesa.”
